The book follows Link, who escapes from his broken and abusive home as a teenager. He bounces off a few places before he runs out of money and is forced to live on the streets.He meets some people while he is there and befriends them and they work together to survive the harsh conditions. The main problem is that there is a serial killer in the area who is hunting the homeless. The book also follows the serial killer. The shelter is an ex-army soldier who has been discharged for not being mentally fit anymore.He feels that it is entirely justified to kill the homeless because he has been trained and encouraged to kill his country's enemies. For him, the homeless are enemies of the country, and eventually Link and Shelter's life collides. The book is marketed and listed as a horror or thriller book. There are certainly elements of this within the novel, but it's more than just a social commentary.It outlines the very real struggle homeless people face every day. The contempt with which others view them and the way many - such as the media or those in a position of power - attack the homeless. They are categorized as hackers or fakes who make a better living than most people who beg.That is if they are interested enough to think about it. The homeless are either a problem that needs clearing or they are invisible. It also highlights the struggles of being a soldier. It is clear that the opponent, the shelter, suffered because of his time in the armed forces.Nobody can justify what he's doing when he's out, but he's clearly in the middle of some kind of psychotic break, most likely caused by severe PTSD from what he experienced in the military. It's well written and does a good job of looking like he's seventeen years old when Link does the novel.And for social commentary, this is not preaching. I am not a fan of books where the author is trying to send a message to your throat. This book nicely shows how you can send a message to the reader without preaching it. It is worth reading.
